New Jersey Governor Chris Christie proposed the idea of extending the school day and school year earlier this month during his ‘State of the State’ address.
Governor Christie said: “I believe we need to take bigger and broader steps to adjust our approach to K-12 education to address the new competitive world we live in. Our school calendar is antiquated both educationally and culturally. Life in 2014 demands something more for our students. It is time to lengthen both the school day and school year in New Jersey.”
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan has proposed this idea as well over the last several years.
What do you think? Should we have a national discussion on extending the school day and the school year? What about going to school year-round? Do we adequately prepare our young people for life in the so-called “real world” or life after high school?
