Manuel guided the Phillies to the 2008 World Series and five consecutive division titles. The 69-year old skipper was in the final year of his contract.
The Phillies went 780-636 under Manuel who was asked to remain with the organization. He won more games than any other manager in franchise history.
Ryne Sandberg was named interim manager through the end of the season. The Hall of Famer was drafted by the Phillies in 1978. He won the NL MVP award in 1984 and was a 10-time All-Star. Sandberg managed in the minor leagues for six seasons.
